Generally speaking the PRIMARY menu is at the top of the page and includes the HOME link.  The SECONDARY menus are on the left side of the page and include the Files & Packages and FREESCOsoft Pages sections.

The rest of the page will include other site features, on the left and the right side of the 'main content' of the page, the part of the page you are reading now.

Creation date :2009/04/14 @ 21:37Last update :2009/06/30 @ 23:40Print the article  Hyperlink

There will be a SUBMENU under the SECONDARY on the left side of the page, that will include links to 'file type specific' listings.

As an example there could be a menu that may include listings like this …

Recently Added
Search
Released Packages
Beta Packages
Non Package

Recently Added will contain a list of the 10 most recently added files or packages.
Search will do a search limited specifically to the files and packages.
... Packages will display a table of the specified choice of files, including file specific details and links to files and related sites.

Package / Files Listings

Below is an example of a package and file listing that will be generated by this site.

Package Name Version
Released PackageBeta PackageNon PackageKernel (type) Size Date OS:
Author author's site:

install path: http://www.freescosoft.com/0.#.x/package_1.110_howler

Descriptions area

In the above examples you will notice specific sections, these sections are explained in more detail below.

Package Name = the complete name of the package being listed.  A complete package or file name, if using the official naming requirements, it will include the name of the application, the version of the package or file, and the authors name. An example of the forms would be like this
name_version_author ( ???<underscore>???<underscore>??? )
or
name-version-author ( ???<hyphen>???<hyphen>??? )

Both examples conform to the official naming requirements and the choice is only determined by the authors personal preference.

Version = This could be the software version or the version of this specific FREESCO package or file.  It all depends on the package or file, and the authors preference for that type of file. Rule of thumb is that with "Released Packages" and "Beta Packages" the version number is that of the source code software, that the specific package was created from..  With "Non Package" , "Linux" and "Windows" files this may vary widely, as some of these files are "made from scratch" and do not have a 'source code' so to speak, that was used, so have their own version number that may differ from the normal or "seems like it is way too low".

File Type = This depicts the type of file : Released Package, Beta Package, Non Package, Linux, Windows, etc.

Size = This is the size of the actual downloadable package file, as it is hosted on this FREESCOsoft site.  This is not the "install size", the size of the package after it is installed onto the FREESCO pc.

Date = This is the date that a 'Released Package' or 'Beta Package', was created, determined by the internal information provided by the package file itself.  Other file (Non Package, Windows and Linux file) dates, are determined by other means but are as accurate as can possibly be. FREESCOsoft does not guarantee the complete accuracy of the dates displayed for these types of files, but we try and make sure they are as accurate as possible.

OS = This is the series or version of FREESCO that the specific package or file was created for.  FREESCO add-on packages or files, are series specific, as the package install process, package hierarchy and required installation files has changed from version 027 to the 03x series and possibly to the future series of FREESCO.  So please pay attention to this section of the listing.

Author = This is the name of the author of this package or file.  This is pretty much self explanatory, it is the one who created the FREESCO package or file.

Authors Site = This is the author's WWW site, that shows information about the author and/or the author's personal pages for their packages and/or files.  This is not an install link to the package that is specified, but it is to the authors web site pages that you would read.

Description = Well this contains the description of the package or file.  If at all possible it will contain any language converted descriptions also.

AND ONE OF the following, depending on how you use it and in what listing you happen to be.

Command = This is the full "copy / paste" FREESCO command, that is used inside of FREESCO (i.e. 'copy / paste ') to install the specified package.  This information is intended to be used inside of FREESCO (i.e. 'copy / paste '), NOT from a web browser, possibly even on another PC, as a download link.

URL Link =  This is a 'copy / paste' link to part of the FREESCO command, that is used to install the specified package.  This link information is intended to be used inside of FREESCO (i.e. 'copy / paste '), NOT from a web browser, possibly even on another PC, as a download link.

Download Link = This is a USABLE link to download the specified file.  The file types with this kind of a link, are files that are required to be downloaded to another PC ( or FREESCO itself ), before being manually included or added to the FREESCO installation PC.

File and package add-ons are distributed in the hopes that they will be useful, WITHOUT WARRANTY, implied or otherwise --- however, every effort has been made towards compliance by the author.

As a rule of thumb, add-on files and packages are not portable to other operating systems, while in their FREESCO format. i.e. you can not take a FREESCO package (program) and use it on a full Linux distribution, just because it is a Linux application.

PACKAGES (Released) are files that are created from ported applications, or applications that are made from scratch. This is the best option when looking for an application for FREESCO.

BETA PACKAGES are PACKAGES but considered to be in a pre-release phase of its life cycle development (ie. not fully tested). These packages may very well contain a bug, or two or three, or you get the idea.

NON-PACKAGES require (or have) no installation, as they are simply a compressed tarball of that application's files (usually with the package hierarchy and attributes preserved). These files are to be manually installed and may require some editing to make them work, the extent of editing will differ from one file to the other..

KERNELS If for some reason you need to use a specific kernel in order to access specific hardware, this is where you would look.

Package Installation Instructions

Well if you are here, then I presume that you are wondering how this site can help to install the package that you have just found.  Depending on the FREESCO series that you are using, the process will differ.

Below you will find the install instructions for each of the FREESCO series, that allows for packages to be installed using a built in FREESCO command.  At the different points in the installation processes, where this site can be of use, I will make a notation about it.  This way you will have a complete list of instructions from start to finish, including information from this site and the regular FREESCO package installation commands.

0.2.7

The first version of FREESCO, that included capabilities for extra packages. This FREESCO version is considered obsolete and should not be used for 'external' applications.  I still keep an archive copy of the packages for this version, for those that use it in places.

< INSTRUCTIONS IN PROCESS >

In FREESCO version 0.2.7, the package install was not built into the setup yet, being it was the first version to allow for them in the first place.

To start with, at the command prompt, you can type installpkg and then hit enter to see the general information for the command

[Linux] installpkg
Usage: installpkg Filename
or installpkg FullURL/filename

A filename by itself will install a package from the official freesco
site. A full URL including a filename will install a package from a
3rd party site. Use listpkg to list available packages.

[Linux]

So with that information the command would be used like this …

Via SSH you would type the command installpkg then a space then "paste" the "Install Path" that is located in the listing for that package.  REMEMBER to remove the .sh from the end of the install path.  In this example it would look like this after the typing and pasting …
installpkg http://www.freescosoft.com/0.2.7/mc_lightning
Press enter to start the install
You will get something like this …

Now downloading the install script for mc_lightning…
Warning: installing software from a 3rd party package could damage your
router's configuration or make it insecure. You should only install a
package from an author/site you trust.
http://www.freescosoft.com/0.2.7/mc_lightning.sh (1K)
mc_lightning.sh [########################] 1K | 3974.47K/s
2015 bytes transferred in 0.00 sec (2210.73k/sec)
Do you want to view the install script before executing it [y/n]?

Type the letter n and then press the enter key, no need to review the file.
It will say "Continue installing [y/n]?"
Type the letter y and then press enter of course ;)
It will show the following …

http://www.freescosoft.com/0.2.7/mc_lightning.tgz (1391K)
mc_lightning.tgz [########################] 1391K | 7176.43K/ss
1424510 bytes transferred in 0.19 sec (7162.32k/sec)

Keep a copy of mc_lightning.sh and mc_lightning.tgz in the /www directory [y/n] ?

No need to keep a copy so type n then press enter

There that is done, it will go through its post-install stuff and end with a command prompt.
Package installation done.

0.3.0 to 0.3.8

< INSTRUCTIONS IN PROCESS >

The best way to install a package to the hard drive of the FREESCO box.

In an SSH connection or while at the box itself, at the command prompt type the following (and hit the enter key)
setup
This will start the setup program.  Then hit the enter key again (to use color by default)
You will now be at the "CHOOSE ROUTER/SERVER TYPE" page.
Here choose
a (and remember to hit the enter key)
to go to the advanced setup screen.
You will be on the "ADVANCED SETTINGS MENU" page.
Here choose
p (and remember to hit the enter key)
to go to the package menu
Here you will see the following …

 p. ADD-ON PACKAGES MENU
The default package install URL is
http://www.FREESCOsoft.com/home/0.3.x/
The default patch/ext2 install URL is
http://www.freesco.org/
The default package save directory is
/www/packages

0. Uninstall package
1. List installed packages
2. List available packages
3. Installed packages documentation
4. Install a package
5. Setup installed packages
6. Enable - Disable packages
7. Enable - Disable package firewall rules
8. Enable - Disable control panel addons
9. Default package install URL
10. Default patch/ext2 install URL
11. Default package save directory
12. Check/install patches from http://www.freesco.org/
13. Install the official ext2 package from http://www.freesco.org/

Command me (x - exit)?

From here, you have a few choices.  Most likely the package you are looking to install, is located on a FREESCOsoft mirror site so all you need to know is the package name.  This is where the web pages come in handy (when doing this via SSH)

If doing this via SSH, like I normally do, you would press
4 (and remember to hit the enter key)
It will state that the FREESCO box needs to be connected to the internet, press
y (and remember to hit the enter key)
It will ask you "URL or directory to install from (ENTER for default url)?"
just hit the enter key, since it is most likely on the main mirror site.
It will then ask "Package name to install ?"
Here you can type the name (or in SSH copy and paste from the mirror site web page)
In this case I will use the pacakge "utils_1.0_dingetje"
So you would type or paste that  (and remember to hit the enter key).
It will say "Installing… utils_1.0_dingetje"
"View the install script (y/n) [n]?"
Just hit the enter key
It will go through its pretests and checks

GNU tools and other essentials

Checking versions… Pv0.3.0 0.3.x
Checking required temp space… Ok
Checking required disk space… Ok
Checking dependencies… Ok
Checking if package is installed… Ok
Checking for existing libraries… Ok
***-- This package is officially unaproved at this time --***
***-- loading this program could damage your system --***

Then it will ask "Do you want install this package (y/n) [y]?"
Just hit the enter key, this is the reason we are here ;)
It will then ask "Do you want to save a copy of this package (y/n) [n]?"
Just hit the enter key again, no need to save it unless you want to.
It will then show this …

http://www.FREESCOsoft.com/0.3.x/utils_1.0_dingetje.tgz (843K)
/boot/9786~/utils_1.0_di [########################] 843K | 3586.55K/s
863266 bytes transferred in 0.24 sec (3569.63k/sec)
Unpacking utils_1.0_dingetje.tgz .. Done
This package contains the next tools:

which - shows the full path of (shell) commands
gzip - compress/decompress file(s)

smtpclnt - simple SMTP mail client, send mail from commandline
tolower - convert file name(s) in current directory to lower case

Most show a short usage message when called with --help or -h,
i.e. wget --help or fromdos -h

All tools are installed in /pkg/bin.
Successfully installed… utils_1.0_dingetje

It will then show " <ENTER> to continue" (press enter of course)

The package is installed.

At this point, some of the packages (possibly 50% or more of them) would need to have one more thing done before the package is actually usable.  This is to run the "setup" for the package.  This is done by typing
5
and pressing the enter key.
From the "LIST OF AVAILABLE PACKAGES TO SETUP" you will see the control script for the packages, mine looks like this …

-----------------------------------------------
rc_mc*
-----------------------------------------------

rc_mc is the control script for the MC package I just installed.
It asks you "Package name to setup ?" so you type the package control script name (from the list given) and press the enter key.
From this point, the "setup" will be specific to the package that you chose.
After the "Setup" finishes, it will say "<ENTER> to continue"
Pressing the enter key takes you back to the main package menu.

Now just exit out of the package menu
Exit out of the Advanced Menu
Then out of the setup itself, no real need to save, nothing was changed in the setup, we just added a package.
DONE
